Unlock the Museum

Opening new doors to our history

Revealing the intriguing stories of our past

Imagine St, John’s in the year 1897. Your own vintage tour of then and now. Walk the streets as you compare the buildings of then and now, where was Gutter Lane and Crow Lane? Did you know that the Public Market was situated at the bottom of Long Street? There are so many secrets to reveal. Staff is presently researching street names and buildings for this exhibit.

Unlock the Museum is a national initiative by the Board and Staff of the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, by conducting a monthly history, archaeology, culture talk at a variety of locations around Antigua (and eventually Barbuda) open to the public. These talks will be at locations of historical interest and feature a speaker or guide who will give good and accurate information. So far, we have hosted three events which were at Fort James, Swetes Village at the historical ‘Blouse and Skirt’ House, and Betty’s Hope.

The purpose of these events is to:

  • Increase national visibility of the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda and wider diaspora.

  • Increase public awareness and knowledge of Antiguan and Barbudan tangible and intangible heritage.

  • Create spaces where knowledge of Antiguan and Barbudan heritage is shared.

  • Develop interactive programmes where the educational resources of the Museum are utilized. For example archival material, artefacts and heritage sites.

  • Develop relationships with local, regional and international schools and organizations for educational outreach, research and capacity building initiatives.

  • Grow museum membership, targeting researchers, social media/ digital creators, web developers ect.

  • To raise awareness and funds for the historic Courthouse building which the Museum has occupied since 1985.
